Biography

Born in 1994, percussionist Sofia Garzotto is a versatile musician, performer and artist. Her repertoire ranges from solo and chamber music projects to orchestral playing. Sofia stands out for her expressive stage presence and her powerful, sensitive touch on the instrument.

As an orchestral musician, Sofia regularly performs with the Ensemble Kontrapunkte Wien and with the Tonkünstler Orchester Niederösterreich, where she held a temporary contract in 2021/2022. She also collaborates as a percussionist with the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, the Johan Strauss Ensemble Linz, the Synchron Stage Vienna, the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto and as a timpanist with the l’Orfeo Baroque Orchestra and the Wiener Akademie Orchestra.

As a freelance artist, Sofia is particularly interested in interdisciplinarity. Together with Jerca Rožnik Novak, she founded the interdisciplinary duo for percussion and dance Garzotto-Rožnik Novak in 2022. After the first video recording collaboration “STURM”, the performance “Synaesthesia” was created; a synesthetic concert-performance combining the expressive possibilities of sound and movement. The duo made their debut at the Grafenegg Festival in 2023.

Inspiring people with music is essential in every aspect of Sofia’s work. Since 2022, she has promoted young talent as a percussion teacher at the Dunkelsteinerwald music school in Lower Austria.

Sofia graduated from an Artistic Master’s degree in 2023 and a Pedagogical Bachelor’s degree in 2022 at the Anton Bruckner Private University, with second study in harpsichord and cultural management. In addition, she completed a diploma in percussion instruments at the Conservatorio C. Pollini in Padova (IT) in 2014 and an exchange program with the marimbist Keiko Abe at the Toho Gakuen School of Music and Drama in Tokyo (JP) in 2013.
